چکیده

In this paper we present black-box models of work-load diierence and use them to develop quantitative methods for the design of benchmark suites. The proposed design methods (the method of optimum subsets , and the method of optimum weights) combine a new concept of program space coverage functions, and the criteria of completeness, redundancy, density, and granularity of benchmark suites.

Universal Benchmark Suites

We present concepts, design, and use of universal benchmark suites. Such suites consist of benchmark programs that represent all relevant characteristic types of workload. The execution times of individual benchmarks and appropriate weights can be used to compute global performance indicators that reflect a spectrum of specific compound workloads. All such global indicators can be obtained from...

Benchmarking Modern Multiprocessors

Benchmarking has become one of the most important methods for quantitative performance evaluation of processor and computer system designs. Benchmarking of modern multiprocessors such as chip multiprocessors is challenging because of their application domain, scalability and parallelism requirements. In my thesis, I have developed a methodology to design effective benchmark suites and demonstra...

For Computer Designers, Understanding the Characteristics of Workloads Running on Current and Future Computer Systems Is of Utmost Importance during Microprocessor Design. a Microarchitecture-independent Method Ensures an Accurate Characterization of Inherent Program Behavior and Avoids the Weaknesses of Microarchitecture-dependent Metrics

......The workloads that run on our computer systems are always evolving. Software companies continually come up with new applications, many triggered by the increasing computational power available. It is important that computer designers understand the characteristics of these emerging workloads to optimize systems for their target workloads. Moreover, the need for a solid workload characteri...

Understanding Concurrency for Graph Workloads in Large Scale Multicores

Algorithms operating on a graph setting are known to be highly irregular and unstructured. This leads to workload imbalance and data locality challenge when these algorithms are parallelized and executed on the evolving multicore processors. Previous parallel benchmark suites for shared memory multicores have focused on various workload domains, such as scientific, graphics, and vision. However...

On synthetic benchmark generation methods

In the process of designing complex chips and systems, the use of benchmark designs is often necessary. However, the existing benchmark suites are not sufficient for the evaluation of new architectures and EDA tools; synthetic benchmark circuits are a viable alternative. In this paper, a systematic approach for the generation and evaluation of synthetic benchmark circuits is presented. A number...
